About MLM

Champions of Law.

Minnesota Lawyers Mutual was founded in 1982 by members of the Minnesota State Bar Association who saw what legal professionals needed.

Our founding conviction hasn’t changed. It’s deepened.

Our vision is to champion the practice of law. Our mission is to embolden attorneys to pursue excellence. And our work — from underwriting to claims to risk education — is dedicated to a single, clarifying purpose: making legal professionals empowered to practice.

We are not a general carrier. We are not a conglomerate. We are a mutual company — owned by the policyholders we serve, accountable to the profession we believe in and committed to the idea that the right insurance partner doesn’t just protect a practice. It champions it, giving it the support and backing it needs to thrive and grow.

VISION, MISSION & VALUES

What We Stand For

Our Vision

To champion the practice of law.

Our Mission

We embolden attorneys to pursue excellence.

Our Values

Proactivity

Anticipating challenges and opportunities, taking action in advance on risks that will impact you and your firm, focusing on prevention.

Family

In the best sense — caring, loyal, invested in relationships. When you join MLM, you join a community that has your back.

Integrity

There in the moments that matter. Trustworthy, transparent and committed to fiscal stewardship on your behalf.

Justice

The law is a gateway to life and liberty. We care about attorney success and provide the tools to contribute to that success — because when attorneys thrive, justice is better served.

Our North Star

We are Minnesota at heart — mission-driven, people-focused, justice-led and champions of law for all — even as we serve the legal profession nationally.

THE FOUNDATION

What We Believe

Our Story

Born from the Bar.
Built for Excellence.

In 1982, members of the Minnesota State Bar Association came together around a simple but powerful idea: lawyers deserved an insurance company that understood them. Not a division of a larger carrier. Not a generalist with a legal vertical. A company whose entire reason for being was the protection and empowerment of legal professionals.

Minnesota Lawyers Mutual was founded on that idea, and it has guided every decision since — from our mutual structure (which ensures policyholders always come first) to our singular focus on lawyers’ professional liability, to the risk management and education programs that make us more than a carrier.

What started in Minnesota has grown to serve legal professionals in 15 states. Along the way, we’ve earned an AM Best “A” (Excellent) rating, returned dividends to policyholders every year since 1988 and built a community of more than 12,000 insured lawyers who renew at rates above 90%.

But the numbers only tell part of the story. The fuller story is in the relationships: the solo practitioner we’ve covered since her first year of practice, the mid-sized firm that calls their Regional Sales Director by his/her/their first name and larger firms that recognize how we deliver personalized attention and the impact that has on the administration of their practice.

Along the way, we’ve been recognized and respected pioneers in our industry. We were the first to integrate automated online applications and renewals. We have delivered industry-leading risk management education for decades. But more importantly? We’ve never lost sight of the personal relationships and service that make us true champions of law.

Our Leadership

The People Behind Your Coverage

MLM’s leadership team brings together decades of experience

in insurance, law, risk management, and service to the legal community. These are the people who set the direction, uphold the values, and ensure that our vision — to champion the practice of law — is delivered every day.

Championing the
Profession Beyond
the Policy

Our commitment to legal professionals extends beyond insurance and risk management.

We believe in the profession itself — its capacity to deliver justice, to create opportunity, to protect life and liberty. That belief drives our involvement in the broader legal community.

Industry Partnerships and Alliances

As Champions of Law, we invest in the communities we serve and develop impact-driven partnerships that make a difference across geographies and in the halls of justice.

Our involvement includes:

MLM works directly with NLADA Mutual as a member company of MLM Group. NLADA Mutual is the only insurance provider exclusively dedicated to serving the equal justice community of advocates — extending the reach of our mission to those who need it most.

MLM emboldens next-generation attorneys through our support of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund (LOSF), helping expand access and opportunity within the legal profession. Since 2021, MLM has funded dozens of ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarships for incoming law students pursuing their legal education in Minnesota, Iowa, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.

Through our involvement with ABA, we fund up to six individual scholarships in honor of R. Bertram “Bert” Greener, MLM’s founding Chairman of the Board, whose vision and leadership helped grow MLM from a single-state mutual insurer into a trusted legal malpractice insurance provider serving attorneys across the nation.

MLM directly contributes to the development of future attorneys through mentorship and professional engagement.

Through the involvement with MLM attorneys and leadership, University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota) law students gain exposure to the realities of legal practice. MLM is honored to contribute to a program that reflects our longstanding commitment to championing the practice of law and supporting the next generation of legal professionals.

MLM’s Law Clerk Program provides local law students with meaningful hands-on experience, mentorship and exposure to the practice of law. The program reflects MLM’s longstanding commitment to strengthening the legal community and supporting future legal professionals. Interested applicants should query MLM at hraccess@mlmins.com.

MLM Risk Retention Group

Champions of Unique and Specialty Coverages

The current landscape of lawyers’ professional liability insurance leaves gaps for specialized practices, judges and those focused on alternative dispute resolution. At Minnesota Lawyers Mutual (MLM), we don’t just accept that limitation — we champion a better way.

In 2016, we forged a bold path forward by establishing MLM Risk Retention Group, Inc., a dedicated vehicle designed specifically for the classes of business the traditional marketplace ignores.

A Risk Retention Group (RRG) is a member-owned insurance company that gives its policyholders a continuing, reliable and stable source of liability insurance.

RRGs must be licensed and capitalized. Like surplus lines carriers, they are prohibited from participating in state guaranty funds.

  • Specialized protection. We target the unique liability exposures of niche legal sectors that generic carriers overlook.
  • Mutual strength, shared success. As a mutual company, we are owned by our policyholders. Every decision we make is driven by your success — not external shareholders.
  • Unshakeable backing. You gain the agility of a specialized program with the financial muscle of Minnesota Lawyers Mutual. We bring decades of stability, an AM Best rating and a legacy of integrity to protect you and those you employ.

MLM Risk Retention Group, Inc. is headquartered in the District of Columbia, the market it serves.

Get coverage built just for you. Apply in the District of Columbia.

Lawyers’ professional liability insurance policies issued in the District of Columbia are underwritten through MLM Risk Retention Group, Inc.

MLM Risk Retention Group, Inc. also writes these programs in several states:

  • 100% Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) policies
  • New Lawyers Program (NLP)
  • Judicial Disciplinary policies

Learn more about the ADR program, the New Lawyers Program and the Judicial Disciplinary policy.

Risk Retention Groups are authorized by federal law and have been in place for more than 25 years. In fact, there are hundreds of RRGs providing liability coverage to doctors, lawyers, educators and other professionals.

  • An RRG must be domiciled in a state or U.S. territory.
  • It is subject to the insurance rules and regulations of its state of domicile.
  • It must register with each state and territory where it writes insurance business.
  • It was authorized by an act of Congress.
